Questions

The groundwork, for people who receive short code texts and people who send them.

5 answers, 2016

The starting point is what an SMS short code is: a number of five or six digits that carries texts for a business or organization, and how it differs from an ordinary ten-digit number. SMS keywords explains the words people text to a code to join or leave a program, including reserved ones such as STOP and HELP.

Two pages are mainly for senders. One sets out what leasing a short code cost in 2016, for a random number and for a chosen one. The other describes the Short Code Registry, which assigns the numbers and keeps track of who holds them.

The last is for the receiving end: why a phone may never get short code messages, and what can be checked with a carrier. Every page here is dated 2016 and describes that year.

How much does an SMS short code cost?

The registry price is the simple part. A code costs $500 or $1,000 a month to lease, and the bill for actually sending texts through it arrives separately.

What is the Short Code Registry?

    What is an SMS keyword?

Every short code program listens for words. Some of them sign a phone up, some fetch a single answer, and a handful are reserved by the industry for the subscriber's protection.

  4. A courier with a parcel smiles at a woman opening her front door

What is an SMS short code?

The five- and six-digit numbers behind bank alerts, delivery updates and text donations are leased, approved by every carrier, and built for volume that an ordinary phone line is not.

  5. A young woman on a sofa looks at the screen of her tablet

Why can't I receive short code messages?

When a verification code or alert never shows up, the fault sits in one of three places: the phone, the phone account, or the program sending the texts. A few minutes of testing tells them apart.
