Conditions of use

How far a page on this site can be relied on.

Not advice

Each page explains how short codes, keywords and the rules around them worked on the date it carries. Read it as background. It is neither legal advice nor compliance advice for any messaging program, and it cannot take account of your circumstances. CTIA and the carriers revise their requirements from time to time, and the way the FCC and the courts read the Telephone Consumer Protection Act keeps shifting. Anyone running or planning a program should check the current documents with their messaging provider, and consult a lawyer where liability is at stake.

Codes and companies named

When a page says which company uses a short code, it describes the position on that page’s date, based on the source it cites. Codes are leased, and a lease can end and the number pass to someone else. Before acting on a text, confirm who sent it through the code’s HELP reply or the company’s own website. Companies, carriers and industry bodies appear because they are the subject. Naming one implies no approval in either direction, and trademarks remain with their owners.

Outside sources

A cited document on another website is its publisher’s to revise or withdraw, and nothing on this page governs it.

Quoting

A short passage may be quoted with a credit to The Five-Digit Desk. Anyone wanting to reprint a full page, or most of one, should email for permission before doing so.

Fixing mistakes

A reported error is checked against a source and fixed if it holds up. This page can be amended at any time without announcement, and its present wording is what counts.
