Software as a service, companies provide “virtual call center” software so that spammers need only a laptop and a few dollars to harass thousands of people. The software includes the capability to use local exchange numbers, or to hide or spoof the message origin entirely. This is fraud plain and simple. Not to mention that the actual message is also fraud. “Nothing can be done” is a lie. Re-task the paramilitary and investigative resources of the DEA, to rid the country of a scourge just as bad as illicit drugs.
